New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday stayed the enforcement of the order passed by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand police requiring eatery owners along the path of Kanwar Yatra to disclose names of owners and the staff employed by them.

The court issued notices to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh governments on petitions challenging their directive asking eateries on Kanwariya Yatra route to put owners’ names.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued notice to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh that issued the ‘nameplate order’. The bench was hearing a plea filed by the NGO Association of Protection of Civil Rights.

“We deem it appropriate to pass interim order prohibiting the enforcement of the above directives. In other words, food sellers may be required to display kind of food, but must not be forced to display names of owners, staff employed,” the bench said.

The top court sought their response and posted the matter for hearing on July 26.

Arrangements have been made across several states for the Kanwar Yatra that started on Monday with the beginning of the Sawan month of the Hindu calenda. Lakhs of Shiva devotees carry the holy water from the Ganges in Haridwar to their homes while offering it at Shiva temples on their way.
