New Delhi:  The Delhi High Court on Friday reassigned the investigation into the drowning of three civil services students in a coaching centre’s basement in Rajinder Nagar to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The court, during the hearing, stated, “In light of the incident’s nature and to prevent public scepticism about the probe, this court is transferring the investigation to the CBI.”

Considering the gravity of the incident and the potential involvement of public servants’ corruption, the investigation is handed over to the CBI. Additionally, the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has been instructed to appoint an official to supervise the CBI’s investigation,” declared the Delhi High Court.

The high court also expressed disapproval of the public authorities’ ineffectiveness and criticized the Delhi Police for detaining Manuj Kathuria, the SUV driver implicated in the flooding of the coaching centre’s basement, labelling the action as unjust.

Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, presiding over the bench, remarked that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials are indifferent, and such negligence has become commonplace.

The court also mocked the police’s approach, remarking, “Thankfully, you haven’t blamed the rainwater for entering the basement, unlike your arrest of the SUV driver for merely driving there.”
