New Delhi: The unruly behaviour of the Opposition parties with the Rajya Sabha Chairman resurfaced on Thursday and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar exited the chamber following intense confrontations with TMC leader Derek O’Brien and other Opposition.
The conflict began during the morning session when the Opposition Leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, attempted to address the issue of Phogat’s disqualification, but Chairman Dhankhar refused to permit it, leading to a heated exchange with TMC leader Derek O’Brien.
Despite this, Dhankhar proceeded with the scheduled Zero Hour listings. Subsequently, Derek O’Brien attempted to make his point but was drowned out by the commotion in the House. Dhankhar reprimanded the TMC member, stating, “You are shouting at the Chair. Your conduct is the ugliest in the House. I condemn your actions. Next time I will show you the door.”
As the uproar persisted, the Opposition parties staged a walkout. Dhankhar criticized the Opposition, saying, “They believe they are the only ones whose hearts are bleeding. The entire nation is grieving for our girl. From the President to the Prime Minister to myself and many others, we all share this pain. However, politicizing the matter is a grave disservice to her. She has a promising future ahead,” he remarked.
J P Nadda, the Leader of the House and BJP president, also denounced the Opposition members’ behaviour towards the Chair and accused the Congress party of politicizing the issue of Phogat’s disqualification. “The Opposition lacks a substantial issue for discussion,” he commented.
Following Nadda’s remarks, Dhankhar voiced his distress over the Opposition members’ conduct and exited the chamber, stating his inability to remain present at that moment. Before his departure from the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar criticized the Opposition members for exceeding all bounds of decorum by instigating chaos in the chamber and undermining the Chair’s dignity.
“They are not merely contesting me but the authority of the Chairman’s position. They question the Chair, implying the incumbent is unfit,” he stated.
Dhankhar lamented the lack of expected support from the chamber despite his exhaustive efforts.
“I am not evading my responsibilities. However, given today’s events, the behaviour of a member, and the Opposition bench’s conduct, I find myself unable to preside over the session,” Dhankhar remarked, noting his departure was with a “heavy heart”.
Subsequent to Dhankhar’s exit, Deputy Chairman Harivansh took over the Zero Hour proceedings. However, Dhankhar resumed his duties during the Question Hour.
