New York: Jannik Sinner crashed Taylor Fritz’s American party, packed with A-list celebrities, by winning his maiden US Open title in straight sets at Flushing Meadows in New York on Sunday.
Sinner is now the first Italian man to win the US Open title.
The Italian world number one has become only the fourth man to claim both the Australian Open and US Open on hard courts in the same season, joining Mats Wilander, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic, with a decisive 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win in the patriotic Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sinner’s year has been remarkable, with a breakthrough in Melbourne and leading the Tour with five titles, including last month’s Cincinnati tune-up tournament. His record for 2024 is an impressive 55-5.
Fritz, supported by a partisan Arthur Ashe crowd that included global pop icon Taylor Swift and her Kansas City Chiefs boyfriend Travis Kelce, aimed to be the first American man to win the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2003.
However, Sinner, entering the tournament amidst controversy from an anti-doping scandal where he avoided a ban despite two positive tests in March, allowed his performance in New York to speak for itself.
