Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has announced that a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to escalate into a cyclone by Wednesday, moving towards Tamil Nadu and nearing the Sri Lankan coast within the next two days.
As of 8:30 am on Tuesday, the depression was situated roughly 310 km southeast of Trincomalee, 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 800 km south-southeast of Chennai.
The IMD anticipates that the system will continue its north-northwestward trajectory and intensify into a cyclonic storm by November 27. It is expected to maintain its path towards the Tamil Nadu coast, grazing the Sri Lankan coast over the following two days.
In Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery Delta region, persistent heavy rains have inflicted damage on standing paddy crops. The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the delta’s Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts.
The deluge has inundated crops across several regions, including Tiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Muthupettai, Mayiladuthurai, and Vedaranyam, affecting at least 2,000 acres of farmland.
Owing to the inclement weather, schools and colleges in the districts of Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai will be closed on November 27. Additionally, educational institutions in Chennai, Chengelpet, Ariyalur, and Kanchipuram have also declared a holiday.
