New Delhi: In a significant move, the Government of India has appointed Sanjay Malhot, the current Revenue Secretary, as the next Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
According to a notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DPoT), Malhotra will assume this prestigious role for a period of three years.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Malhotra’s appointment as the 26th RBI Governor, succeeding Shaktikanta Das, whose current term is set to conclude on December 10. Das has served as the RBI Governor for longer than the typical five-year maximum established in recent decades (since the 1960s).
Sanjay Malhotra is a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service () officer of the cadre. He holds an Engineering degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA.
With over 33 years of distinguished,hotra has exhibited exceptional leadership across various sectors, including power, finance and taxation, information technology, and mines.
Prior to his role as Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance, he served as Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
Malhotra possesses extensive expertise in finance taxation at the State and Central Government levels.
