Odisha doctor facilitates delivery of minor girl, hides baby; 4 held – N.F Times

Rourkela: Four persons were arrested today by Bisra police over the alleged impregnation of a minor girl and subsequent facilitation of illegal delivery of a child in Rourkela of Sundargarh district.

The accused were identified as Sanjit Mahanta, Bisra community health centre (CHC) pharmacist Sanat Mohanty, manager of a private nursing home in Rourkela Sanjay Panda, and key accused Sanjit’s relative Mahabir Mahato.

The newborn girl was rescued by local police and a team of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) from the house of a doctor. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the doctor, who is absconding. Allegedly, the doctor had performed the illegal delivery and had secretly kept the baby in his house.

According to a source, the key accused Sanjit from Jareikela locality in the city previously established a physical relationship with the victim minor and impregnated her. Fearing that the matter would come to the fore one day, Sanjit contacted the CHC pharmacist to terminate the pregnancy.

Sanat, in turn, sent Sanjit to a well-known nursing home in Rourkela city to either conduct a safe delivery or to terminate the pregnancy. After discussing with the health facility manager, the minor girl was admitted. Later, the doctor identified as Verma facilitated the baby’s delivery. The minor victim gave birth to a newborn girl. However, the minor was informed that her pregnancy was terminated.

Bisra police have launched a probe into the illegal act, a senior official said.
