Novak Djokovic was not at his peak on Thursday at Wimbledon, yet he managed to advance to the third round after three hours of intense play. The Serbian triumphed over the spirited British wild card Jacob Fearnley with a 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory, despite Fearnley’s aggressive performance.
Before a full house on Centre Court, where the crowd fervently supported Fearnley, Djokovic seemed poised for a straight-sets victory when he broke the 22-year-old’s serve during the third set. Nevertheless, Fearnley mounted a comeback to take the set, challenging the second seed’s dominance.
As the stakes heightened, Djokovic upped his game in the fourth set, intensifying his play and securing a decisive break in the 11th game to win their inaugural Lexus ATP Head2Head encounter.
The winner of 24 major titles, Djokovic is pursuing his eighth Wimbledon crown and will face either Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry or Australian Alexei Popyrin next. Djokovic previously defeated Popyrin at this year’s Australian Open.
