Bhubaneswar: The assembly on Friday was once again disrupted due to the controversy surrounding the proposed name change of Ravenshaw University.
Members of the BJD brought up the issue, putting the state government on the spot, which prompted a response from the BJP. Additionally, BJD members have vehemently demanded the retraction of the Arms Act case against MLA Byomkesh Roy, while Congress members have also called for the government’s stance on the Ravenshaw University name change matter.
During the Zero Hour, BJD MLA Byomkesh Roy expressed concerns for his safety, suggesting that the BJP is retaliating against him for participating in an intellectual’s torch procession. He stated that an investigation implicating him under the Arms Act was unjust and questioned the propriety of his involvement as an MLA in a democratic event. He criticized the BJP government for its alleged intolerance, evidenced by its use of ED and CBI against the opposition, and announced his intention to protest against the Cuttack DCP and IIC.
I participated in revival debates and torch processions upon the invitation of Ravenshaw’s alumni. However, I have been accused of threatening individuals with a firearm. I was prepared to discuss this matter whenever the Union Minister requested. Consequently, BJD MLA Byomkesh Ray has sought protection from the Speaker in the assembly.
Ganeshwar Behera stated that there has been an attempt to stifle diverse opinions. The state is plagued by violent politics. A spurious case has been lodged against the MLAs. The individual who initiated this false case ought to face prosecution, and appropriate action should be taken against them. An impartial investigation is warranted. The truth behind such revelations should come to light. Following Behera’s remarks, BJD MLAs gathered at the centre of the House to demonstrate. BJD members caused an uproar, insisting on the retraction of the Arms Act case against MLA Byomkesh Roy.
Currently, BJP MLA Irasis Acharya has strongly criticized the BJD. He stated, “A case must be filed whenever there is an incident.” He questioned why the Chandabali MLA visited Ravenshaw even though it is not within his constituency. Although a case has been registered, no charge sheet has been filed yet. A countercase has also been registered. Previously, individuals protesting against the government were arrested even without a formal case.
The legacy of Mr Ravenshaw is indeed controversial. Many people in Odisha perished during the Great Famine while he was in charge. The BJD appears to be entrenched in a feudal mindset. Clearing traffic for a Tamil officer does not alleviate concerns. “If you have the courage, let’s debate on Ravenshaw,” proposed Irasis.
The speaker had to adjourn the house twice due to opposition uproar, first from 11:58 to 12:30, and then again from 12:34 to 4:00.
