Jaiswal-Rahul, First Opening Pair to Put 200-Run Partnership in Australia – N.F Times

Perth: Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul have made history by setting the record for the highest opening partnership by an Indian duo in Test cricket on Australian turf.

They amassed 201 runs in the first Test at Perth Stadium, surpassing the previous record of 191 runs established by Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth in the 1986 Sydney Test. The formidable stand was ended by Mitchell Starc when KL Rahul edged the final ball of the 63rd over to the wicketkeeper, having scored 77 runs off 176 balls.

This partnership also marked India’s first 100-plus opening stand in Test cricket on Australian soil since 2004. The last Indian pair to achieve this was Virender Sehwag and Akash Chopra, who put together 123 runs in the Sydney Test on India’s 2003-04 tour of Australia.

Highest first-wicket partnership

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul have become the sixth visiting pair to score over 200 runs in a Test match in Australia. The record for the highest first-wicket partnership is held by England’s JB Hobbs and W Rhodes, who put together 323 runs in the 1912 Melbourne Test. The previous instance of a visiting opening pair surpassing the 200-run mark in Australia was in 1986 when CWJ Athey and BC Broad scored 223 runs at the WACA Stadium in Perth.
