New Delhi: In a significant development, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) faces a challenge as its senior leader and former chief minister, Champai Soren, is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to sources familiar with the matter.
Champai Soren had a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi late Monday night, accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also oversees the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections, slated for November-December.
Champai is expected to formally become a member of the BJP on August 30, as announced by Sarma in a social media update.
“Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a prominent Adivasi leader of our nation, @ChampaiSoren Ji, met with the Honorable Union Home Minister @AmitShah Ji recently. He is scheduled to officially join the @BJP4India on the 30th of August in Ranchi,” Sarma shared on platform X.
Previously, Sarma had hinted at a potential alliance, expressing his desire for Champai to switch allegiances to the BJP during a press interaction in Ranchi on Monday.
Champai, who held the position of Jharkhand’s chief minister from February 2 to July 3, voiced his dissatisfaction with his current party and its leadership on August 20.
Soren took to social media to express his grievances about how he was ousted from the chief ministerial role without prior notice and how his scheduled events were abruptly cancelled, among other issues.
